Enterprise WordPress Hosting

WordPress' ubiquity certainly adds to its attractiveness when for agency website hosting solutions. However, the WorldPress ecosystem can be the wild west when it comes to consistency, and a bad design can cause major problems later. Many smaller sites can get away with a less structured approach, but when it comes to mission critical websites, a more rigid and predictable architecture goes a long way.

This document describes our baseline Enterprise WordPress build.

Hardware stack

One way in, one way out.

All of our designs include multiple levels of protection. All public traffic routes through a protective edge layer provided by Cloudflare -- this is enabled by the hosting provider's cloud firewall. The database and any attached block storage are only accessible privately by the web server.

The edge layer aggressively caches all traffic, so this type of website is fast and secure, worldwide.

Software stack

The hardware design is only possible with a compatible software stack. Even at the origin, the WordPress installation is protected by a software firewall and multiple levels of internal caching -- this design can stand on its own and still perform very well if the edge layer needs to be temporarily lifted for maintenance.
